English Nine
is a one year, two-credit course that covers the basic areas of language arts including literature, writing, speech, grammar,
and vocabulary. The major units of study we will cover this year are as follows:
Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, Grammar, The Odyssey by Homer, nonfiction, Research Paper and Mechanics, Poetry, Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, and Utopia Literature Circles.
Throughout
both semesters you will write in a variety of formats and styles with an emphasis placed on the writing process. The
importance of reading will be addressed as you refine your ability to paraphrase, summarize, and move beyond the literal interpretation
of a text. The ability to communicate successfully with others will also be stressed
as we focus on group communication and problem solving in addition to traditional public speaking.
